Euphoria on the Ketogenic Diet
First, let us remind you quickly the principles behind the ketogenic diet (also referred to as the keto diet). What is the mechanism of action behind these atypical occurrences? Can it be explained by scientists?
The science behind the keto diet euphoria is very thin, to say the least – if not inexistent. It is not a phenomenon which has been extensively studied. - Ketogenic diets are neuroprotective. Some physicians go as far as claiming that ketogenic diets might help in the curing of mental diseases such as autism, bipolar disorder, unipolar depression, or schizophrenia – thanks to its brain healing properties.
Ketones are arguably the most efficient fuel for both the brain and the heart, and their use as an energy substitute would result in optimal mental functioning, explaining the clear state of mind.
- Another hypothesis, perhaps the most down-to-earth and reliable according to me, is that one of the ketones produced during ketosis (called BHB or beta-hydroxybutyrate) is an isomer of GHB, a drug known for its pro-social and euphoric properties, not unlike MDMA or ecstasy. It used to be available as a supplement sold in health stores, but was labeled illegal when the club scene discovered its effect in high doses and abused the substance. BHB possesses a structure very similar to GHB’s, and could have the same mechanism of action in the brain. It might activate certain GHB receptors, as well as bind to GABA-B receptors. That might be the reason why the euphoria is mainly reported in the initial phase of the diet.

The Dangers of a Keto Diet
The ketogenic diet can work for weight loss, but it is not a diet that should be eaten for a long period of time. Ketones are supposed to be used for an emergency fuel source for the body, while carbohydrates should be the main source of energy for the body to function properly.
The longer a person eats this way, the more keytones accumulate in the body, and this is harmful. Keytones are very acidic and for good health, our bodies should be slightly alkaline.
When keytones build up in the body, and the acid levels increase, the body buffers all of this acid by pulling calcium from your bones. So basically, if you are on this diet for any length of time, you are at risk from osteoporosis, because you are actually urinating the calcium out of your bones.
Since this diet is so very high in animal proteins and food, it is much, much higher in cholesterol and saturated fat. A diet high in animal proteins puts you at a higher risk of cancer, diabetes, or other diseases.
Since the keto diet is so very low in carbs, it can also cause kidney stones, gallbladder problems and gallbladder stones, abnormal heartbeat, bad breath, dizziness, muscle cramps, constipation and dehydration. So if you are on a keto diet, you must drink a great deal of water.
Carbohydrates soak up water, while animal meat does not. When you cut out most carbohydrates, like potatoes and whole grain foods, extra water is excreted in your urine. Being so dehydrated can cause what is called the “keto flu,” a period of fatigue, headaches, and pain, often caused by dehydration and loss of electrolytes.
Another danger of the keto diet, due to the large amount of saturated fats, is it raises levels of dangerous LDL cholesterol and causes atherosclerosis, the buildup of fats and cholesterol in the arteries.
If you decide to try this diet for weight loss, you should test your urine with urinalysis keytone test strips, to monitor the level of keytones in your body. It is also a good idea to have your doctor monitor your cholesterol levels also.
Pros and Cons
There is research that shows the ketogenic diet is healthy and can help in weight loss, according to the Experimental and Clinical Cardiology study. Ongoing research is showing that this diet can help with epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.
At this time, there are certainly two camps of thoughts. Monitor how you feel on the ketogenic diet and if you feel unhealthy, than this way of eating is probably not for you.
